SCSU Women’s Basketball Defeats Bridgeport, 59-48, For Fourth-Straight Win

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated the University of Bridgeport, 59-48 in a non-conference battle on Saturday night. The Owls improved to 4-0, while the Purple Knights fell to 0-4. The trio of Katie Williamson, Hope Fox and Delaney Haines combined for 46 out of the Owls' 59 points in their fourth straight victory of the season.

Katie Williamson led the team with 18 points, was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, grabbed two rebounds and added an assist. Hope Fox recorded a career-high of 16 points, as she shot 50% from the field, grabbed a team-best of seven boards, had four steals and dished out two assists. Delaney Haines had 12 points, shot 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, grabbed three rebounds, had three steals and two assists. 

Jillian Martin totaled nine points, with 100% from the free-throw line, had three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Rheyna Steinauer grabbed six boards, had four points and two assists. Ally Sentance posted five rebounds and a team-best of four steals. Renza Milner added a block and a rebound against the Purple Knights. 

In the first quarter, the Purple Knights started off the game with a 5-0 lead. After a slow start, Jillian Martin got the scoring going for the Owls with two made free-throws and a jumper, in addition to Katie Williamson making a three-pointer to take the lead of 7-5. Bridgeport retook their lead of 12-10 and never looked back, despite three made free-throws by Williamson and Fox.
 
In the second quarter, Southern came out of their huddle, with momentum by Hope Fox as she tied the score, then took the lead in the first 10 seconds with a made layup and a made free-throw. The Owls extended their lead to six, as Delaney Haines hit a three-pointer and Williamson made a jumper. Fox continued to be everywhere on the floor, as she grabbed two rebounds, a steal and scored 12 points in the second quarter alone.
 
In the third quarter, Delaney Haines made a great impact for the Owls, as she scored nine points to give Southern more of their lead. Williamson added in four points of her own and Ally Sentance played tough defense with two steals and two rebounds as Bridgeport decreased the Owls' advantage to 13 heading into the last quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, it was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, as both Bridgeport and Southern traded fouls and free-throws. The Purple Knights were doing their best to make a comeback as they got within seven of the Owls' lead. However, key points from Williamson, Fox and Steinauer were the deciding factor into Southern Connecticut's 59-48 win over Bridgeport.
 
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in their Northeast-10 Conference home opener against Southern New Hampshire University in the James Moore Field House.
