SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats SNHU, 80-61

Longest Season-Opening Winning Streak Since 2006-07

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball rolled to an 80-61 win against Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the NE10 while SNHU dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Southern's five-game, season-opening winning streak marks the first time the Owls won their first games of the year since the 2006-07 season – which ended with the Owls winning the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Katie Williamson led four Owls in double figures as the grad student posted 23 points, with six rebounds and two blocks. Delaney Haines had 18 points, as well as four assists and a game-high three blocks while Rheyna Steinauer totaled 14 points, five assists and three steals. Hope Fox had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, as well as two steals. Jillian Martin had six rebounds, four assists and three steals, with four points, and Ally Sentance came off the bench to total nine points and two steals in 17 minutes.

Southern led for 39 minutes of the game, with its 78-58 lead with a minute to play serving as its biggest lead of the game. Southern used an 8-2 run to take its first double-digit lead, 24-14, with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter. Coming out of the first intermission, Southern used a 7-3 run – with all seven points coming from Williamson – to take a 31-19 lead – it's biggest of the first half.

Leading 42-31 to start the second half, Southern opened with a 7-2 to take a 49-33 lead with seven minutes to go. SNHU countered with a 9-0 to cut Southern's lead to 49-42 with two minutes to play in the third. The Owls responded with a 7-0 run to close the third and take a 56-42 lead.

SNHU managed to pull within 10 points as the Owls struggled from the floor. After a timeout by Kate Lynch, Southern answered by outscoring the Penmen, 20-12, over the final six minutes of the game while converting on all six field goals and 8-of-10 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Southern returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when it travels to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi at 5:30 p.m. The Owls will return to the Moore Field House on Saturday, Nov. 30 for a non-conference matchup against Bloomfield College at 1:30 pm.
