NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Bloomfield College, 112-39 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improved to an overall record of 7-0 while the Bears dropped to an overall record of 3-4. Southern broke their program record of most points scored in a single-game, with 112 points scored. It is the Owls' seventh-straight victory of the season, and it is the fourth game of the season that they have held a team under 50 points.
Delaney Haines recorded a career-best and the fourth-most points scored in a single-game in SCSU program history with 36 points. Haines hit 56% from the floor, 8-for-15 from beyond the arc, 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, dished six assists and had a steal.
Katie Williamson recorded 19 points, shot 8-for-18 from the field, 3-for-3 from the free-throw line, grabbed six boards, had two blocks and a steal. With Williamsons' two blocks, she has 100 career blocks so far, which puts her third all-time in SCSU program history.
Arianna Gerkin notched the first double-double of her career, with a career-best of 14 points and 10 rebounds, as she was 6-for-9 from the field, 100% from the free-throw line, two blocks and a steal.
Hope Fox also had her first double-double, with a career-best of 12 rebounds and 11 points. Fox had five assists, four steals, was 3-for-4 from the three-point line and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
Jillian Martin scored 10 points, as she had seven assists, 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, and had three steals against the Bears.
Rheyna Steinauer had nine points, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals, while
Marisa Lee had five points, two rebounds and was 2-for-4 from the floor.
Ally Sentance had three points, while dishing out a career-best of eight assists, grabbed seven rebounds had a block and a steal.
Kieara Kirvan scored three points and had an assist while
Renza Milner had two points and seven rebounds against Bloomfield.
As a team, Southern Connecticut had 34 assists, which ties the single-game program record which was set against Saint Anselm in 2022, puts them in second all-time in single-game program history with 46 made field goals, third all-time with single-game field goal percentage with 55% and puts them tied for fourth all-time in single-game records with 57.1% from the three-point line.
In the first quarter, the Owls started off the game strong with a 25-2 run. It was a team effort all-around as multiple players scored a handful points in the first few minutes of play. The Bears got most of their points from the free-throw line, as Southern dominated in the run of play with only holding them to nine points. The Owls finished the quarter with 37 points with 61% from the floor and 62.5% from the three-point line.
In the second quarter, Bloomfield started the quarter with a made jumper, but Southern hit a made three-pointer by
Delaney Haines. The Owls did well defensively and offensively, with big time steals and rebounds by
Hope Fox,
Delaney Haines,
Arianna Gerkin and
Jillian Martin. To end the quarter, Southern went on a 9-0 run with two more three-pointers by Haines and a three-pointer before time expired by Fox to put them up, 67-13 at the half.
In the third quarter, Haines started right where she left off with a three-pointer to get the Owls, to 70 points. Nearing the end of the half, Gerkin and Milner made two layups to extend the lead to 58 going into the fourth. In the last quarter, Williamson added four points on the board quickly for the Owls, then
Marisa Lee had a made layup in the paint, then made a block down the floor and came back and made a jumper for four close points. Gerkin went off for eight points in the last three minutes of the game and Kirvan hit a three-pointer to close out the Owls' 112-39 victory over the Bears.
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4 in a 5:30 pm NE10 matchup against Saint Anselm in Manchester, NH. Southern will come back to the Moore Field House on Saturday, Dec. 7 in an NE10 matchup against Bentley at 1:30 pm.
