WEEKLY PREVIEW: SCSU Gymnastics Senior Day, Women's Basketball To "Play4Kay"

Southern Connecticut gymnastics will host its only home meet of the season on Saturday, Feb. 10 when it welcomes Rhode Island College and Springfield, with Senior Day and Alumni Day also on tap. SCSU women's and men's basketball hosts Pace on Wednesday, Feb. 7, with the women's team set to "Play4Kay" for breast cancer awareness.

In addition to gymnastics home meet on Saturday, the Owls will also compete in Yale's Tonry Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 11 while basketball travels to Saint Anselm on Saturday, Feb. 10. Men's and women's track & field will also compete in the Boston University Valentine Invitational, Yale's Geigengack Invitational and Rhode Island's Coaches Invitational.

Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

Prior to the start of Saturday's tri-meet against RIC and Springfield, the Owls will recognized it's six seniors: Audrey Arnold, Jayci Jordan, Emily Kahl, Kamryn Leinheiser, Syndey Smith and Hanna Zebdi.
Notes: Lexi Bracher leads the Owls with a 9.633 average on the vault, which ranks 10th among Division II's, followed by Hanna Zebdi and Sophia Ruecker (9.644) … Against New Hampshire this past weekend, Bracher had a team, season-best 9.800 … Jayci Jordan has averaged a 9.563 on the bars to lead the Owls, while Shreya Munshi is averaging 9.538 in four meets … first-year Owl Gigi Mastellone had a team-best 9.800 on the bars on Jan. 21 … Alexa Melanson leads Southern on the Beam with a 9.644 average, which ranks seventh among Div. II,  followed by Angelina Stanfa at 9.508 … Libby Allen owns the Owls' top score on the beam this year with a 9.75 against Brown and Alaska on Jan. 28 … Allen also averages a team-best 9.700 on the floor while Melanson sits second with a 9.650 average followed by Zebdi at 9.612 … Melanson's 9.825 this weekend was also a team-high for the year … First-year Owl Kylie Sitty is the Owls' leading scorer to date with 103.35 points followed by Ruecker with 92.775. Melanson (77.175), Zebdi (77.025) and Allen (75.775) round out the top five.

SCSU Women's Basketball, 3-2 in its last five games, will host Pace for a pivotal NE10 matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024. The Owls and Setters hit the court at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House. On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Owls travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm at 1:30 p.m.

Notes: Katie Williamson leads the Owls with 11.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game … Makenzie Helms has led the Owls in scoring in Southern's last three games and sits at 9.8 points per game as well as 3.1 assists per contest … Jillian Martin leads the team with 4.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game while averaging 6.2 points per contest … Delaney Haines sits at 7.5 points per game while shooting a team-leading 38.5% (30-78) from three-point range … Hope Fox averages 5.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steal per game.

SCSU men's basketball will host Pace on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House. The Owls and Setters are currently tied for fifth in the NE10 standings at 8-7. The Owls will travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Notes: Marty Silvera earned his second NE10 Player of the Week honor of the year on Monday, Feb. 5. In a 2-0 week that saw Southern knock off American International and Saint Rose, Silvera posted back-to-back 20-point performances while hitting on 14-of-24 (58.3%) from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Silvera also averaged 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 steals per game. Against AIC, he potted 20 while converting on 8-of-12 from the field including 2-of-3 from long range and totaling nine assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Against Saint Rose, Silvera had 20 points, hitting on 6-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line, and had a season-best eight steals, four assists and three boards … For the year, Silvera averages 12.8 points, 6.5 assists, 2.8 steals and 4.3 rebounds per game and ranks second in the country in assists per game, and 11th in steals per game … Josh McGettigan leads the Owls with a 18.4 scoring average with 7.0 rebounds while slashing .484/.402/.793) … Last weekend, McGettigan averaged 20.5 points and six rebounds while slashing 50/38.5/90.9 for the week. Against AIC, McGettigan had 19 points and six rebounds while hitting on 6-of-13 from the floor including 3-for-8 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Against Saint Rose, he scored a team-high 22 points, knocking down 2-of-5 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe, with six rebounds and two blocks … Kazell Stewart is averaging 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while also leading the Owls with 1.8 blocks per game. Stewart is also leading the team with a .617 field goal percentage … Cherif Diarra leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game while also scoring at a 8.3 points per game clip.

Notes: In their last time out, 4x400 Relay team of Hannah Caiola, Ella Maclean, Kisha Francois and Avery Winters were named the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Relay of the Week. In addition, Maclean, Francois and Caiola were named to Honor Roll for Week Five as announced by the NE10, Tuesday Jan. 30 … At the John Thomas Terrier Classic, the Owls' 4x400 Relay team of Hannah Caiola, Ella Maclean, Kisha Francois and Avery Winters finished 8th out of 31 teams with a season-best time of 3:47.68, which also stands as the 7th best time in NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field this season … At the UMass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational, Kisha Francois placed sixth out of 72 participants in the Long Jump, most of whom were from NCAA Division I schools, with a distance of 5.70m. Francois also finished 23rd out of 142 in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 25.60 and was also part of the 4x400 Relay team at the John Thomas Terrier Classic that posted a season-best time of 3:47.68, which stands as the seventh best in the country to date … Caiola posted a time of 55.61 in the 400 Meters to finish third out of 53 runners. Caiola's time in the 400 was a PR and also ranks as the 8th best time in the event in the country to date. Caiola was also part of the Owls' 4x400 Relay at the John Thomas Terrier Classic that posted a time of 3:47.58 which was a season-best for the Owls and ranks seventh, nationally … Maclean had three top-10 finishes at the UMass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational and the John Thomas Terrier Classic. On Friday, Jan. 26 at the Riverhawk Invitational, Maclean finished 10th out of 108 in the 200 Meters with a time of 24.97 and then posted a time of 7.75 in the 60 Meters qualifying race. She was also part of the Owls' 4x400 Relay team at the John Thomas Terrier Classic that posted a time of 3:47.67 and finished 8th out of 31 teams. The Owls time in the race was also the seventh best in the country, to date.

Notes: In their last time out, Cameron Belton was named the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, freshman Sam Sandler was named the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Track Rookie of the Week, the 4x400 Relay team was named the NE10 Men's Relay of the Week and junior Jonathan Volpe was named to the Honor Roll for Week Five, as announced by the NE10 on Tuesday, Jan. 30 … At the UMass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational, Belton finished 5th in the Shot Put with a season-best 17.11m. Belton's throw is the 16th best in the country this season, and also the top mark among NE10 competitors to date. Belton's mark beat seven NCAA Division I opponents … At the UMass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational, Sandler finished fourth out of 91 runners in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 48.33, which is the seventh best time in the country and the top NE10 time of the year. Sandler also ran the anchor of the Owls' 4x400 Relay that finished third out of 28 teams with a time of 3:13.66, which is also the top time in the NE10 and the seventh best time in the country … At the John Thomas Terrier Classic, the 4x400 Relay team of Max Musial, Nolan Freeman, Hunter Dale, Sam Sandler finished third out of 28 teams with a time of 3:13.66, which stands the Owls' top time of the season. The Owls' time is the fifth best in the country and the top NE10 time this season … At the John Thomas Terrier Classic, Owls standout Volpe broke the program record in the indoor mile with a time of 4:03.16. Volpe's time stands as the 5th best in the country this season as well as the top NE10 time this season. He followed with an 11th place finish, out of 77, at the Riverhawk Invitational in the 800 with a time of 1:55.67.
