SCSU Men's Basketball Defeats Pace, 79-64, For Third-Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball won its third-straight game with a 79-64 win against Pace. With the win, the Owls improved to 15-7 overall and 9-7 in the NE10 while Pace dropped to 12-10 overall and 8-8 in conference play.

Marty Silvera led the Owls with 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds as he hit the 20-point mark for the third-straight game. Kazell Stewart finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Josh McGettigan netted 14 points with five rebounds. Cherif Diarra had 10 rebounds and six assists with seven points.


The first ten minutes of the game saw both teams deadlocked at 9-9 with 10:50 to go in the half before Pace used an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead with 7:32 to play. From there, it was all Owls as Southern outscored Pace, 23-5, to take a 33-22 lead into the break.

Southern tied the game at 21-21 with 3:55 to play before closing the half with a 14-1 run with five different players scoring with Josh McGettigan, Mason Williams and Silvera connecting from long range. Silvera led the first-half charge with half of the Owls' points, 16, after hitting 7-of-11 from the floor including 2-of-3 from long range.

Southern held onto their lead for the rest of the game, pushing it to 16 points, 45-29, with 15:24 to play. Pace showed some life and pulled within six points, 56-50, after outscoring the Owls, 21-12, over an eight-minute stretch. The Owls then outscored Pace, 23-14 over the rest of the game with McGettigan leading the Owls with eight points.

Southern returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm in a NE10 tilt at 3:30 p.m. The Owls return home on Tuesday, Feb. 13 to host New Haven at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House. Southern Connecticut will welcome the 2013-14 team that won the NE10 Tournament and NCAA East Region Championships in celebration of the team's 10th anniversary.
