SCSU Women's Basketball Tops Pace, 48-41

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball won a defensive battle against Pace, 48-41, at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 12-10 overall and 9-7 in the NE10 while Pace dropped to 15-7 overall and 9-7 in conference play.

Delaney Haines led the Owls with 16 points after she converted on 6-of-8 from the floor including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Haines has had the hot hand for the Owls as of late as she eight of her last 14 three-point attempts over the last three games while averaging 10.5 points off the bench.


Katie Williamson had 15 rebounds, her second-highest total of the season, and missed a double-double after finish with nine points. The senior post player also had two blocks. Jill Martin had six assists while Makenzie Helms totaled 10 points in the win.

A tight game from the start, Southern responded to a 10-9 deficit after the first quarter by outscoring the Setters in the second, 15-12, to take a 24-22 lead into the break. Williamson scored the first three points of the second quarter before a pair of Pace free throws tied the game at 12-12. After both teams exchanged layups, Hope Fox knocked down a jumper with 5:16 to play in the half that gave the Owls a 16-15 lead that they held for the rest of the game.

The third quarter saw the Owls lead by as many as eight points, 38-30, with 2:31 to go after Rheyna Steinauer hit a driving layup and then knocked down a three on back-to-back possessions. The fourth quarter turned physical and low scoring as the teams combined for 11 points in the final frame.

Southern returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm in a NE10 tilt at 1:30 p.m. The Owls return home on Tuesday, Feb. 13 to host New Haven at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
