SCSU Women's Basketball Falls To Bentley In NE10 Championship Game

WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Bentley, 62-49, in the 2024 Northeast-10 Conference Championship Game at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass. Owls senior Makenzie Helms was named to the All-Tournament Team. Hope Fox was also named the NE10 Elite24 Award Winner for the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average at the conference championship.

Jillian Martin led the Owls with 12 points and hit 2-of-3 from three-point range. Delaney Haines totaled 10 points while Williamson had eight points and four rebounds. Hope Fox finished with six points and six rebounds off the bench.



Southern opened the game with a 7-3, highlighted by a three by Jill Martin and back-to-back baskets by Katie Williamson and Ashley Evans. Bentley edged its way to within a basket before a pair of layups from Martin and a layup by Delaney Haines gave Southern an 11-5 lead. Bentley scored the last four points of the quarter but Southern never trailed and started the second with an 11-9 lead.

Southern opened the second quarter with a 9-4 run that gave them a 20-13 lead with 6:53 to go in the half. Both teams went back-and-forth with Makenzie Helms scoring twice as Southern clung to a 22-17 lead. Bentley closed the half with a 9-4 run of its own as the game headed to the break tied at 26-26.

The third quarter featured another back-and-forth battle with the score tied until late in the third. Bentley managed to rattle off back-to-back baskets to take its largest lead of the game, 42-38, with under a minute to play before drawing a foul with 2.4 seconds left in the quarter. After the Falcons converted both free throws to take a 44-38 lead, Makenzie Helms threw up a desperation heave from halfcourt and drew a foul at the buzzer. She subsequently went to the line and hit on 2-of-3 to cut Bentley's lead to 44-40 heading to the fourth. Martin continued to lead the  Owls' leader in the third, scoring seven of Southern's 14 points in the quarter, while also passing out two assists.  

In the fourth, Bentley scored the first five points of the frame to take a 49-40 lead. Southern countered with a 9-4 run of its own to pull within Bentley, 53-49 with 4:17 to play. Bentley clamped down and outscored Southern, 9-0, to take a 62-49 lead with 51 seconds to play before closing out the game with a pair of free throws.

Southern Connecticut will now await the NCAA Selection Committee's decision on the 2024 tournament to learn if the Owls will receive an At-Large bid. The selection show will be on Sunday, Mar. 11 at 11 p.m.
