SCSU Men's Basketball Advances To NE10 Championship Game With 82-73 Win Against Saint Anselm

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Saint Anselm, 82-73, in a Northeast-10 Conference Championship Semifinal matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls will travel to Manchester, N.H. to face Southern New Hampshire University for the 2024 NE10 Championship on Saturday, Mar. 9.

Marty Silvera poured in a game-high 30 points with nine rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Silvera shot 10-for-17 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three-point range while converting on 7-of-11 from the free throw line. Kazell Stewart had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Josh McGettigan had 14 points. Cherif Diarra, named the NE10 Defensive Player of the Year a day earlier, had three blocks and two steals to go with nine points.

Southern returns to the NE10 Championship Game for just the second time since the Owls joined the conference in 2001. The Owls previously won the NE10 Championship tournament in 2014, defeating New Haven, 73-71, on their home court. Southern New Hampshire previously won the NE10 tournament in 2013 and 2016.

Southern opened the game with a 13-4 run that saw McGettigan lead the Owls with six points. Saint Anselm countered with a 10-2 run of its own to make it 15-14. The Hawks outscored Southern, 12-8, over the next five minutes to grab their first lead of the game, 25-23. Down the stretch, Stewart and Silvera combined for 11 points as they outscored Saint A's, 11-8, to close out the half with a 34-31 lead. Silvera, Stewart and McGettigan all had 10 points in the half.

Coming out of the break, Southern opened up with an 11-5 run to give them a 45-36 cushion. The Owls took their biggest lead of the half, 64-50, with 8:21 to play after a three-pointer by Sean James and a layup by Stewart on back-to-back possessions. After a Saint Anselm layup with 5:36 to play made it an eight-point game, Mason Williams banged home a three-pointer to give the Owls an 11-point lead. Southern would not trail by less than double figures until a three in the closing seconds.
