SCSU Football Tipped In Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University football lost to Shepherd, 23-0, in the Owls' home opener at Jess Dow Field. The Owls open the year at 0-1 while Shepherd finishes its season opener at 1-0.

E'Lijah Gray amassed 80 yards of total offense including 49 yards on 18 carries while he also had three catches for 31 yards. Seth Westover led the Owls with five catches, totaling 20 yards. Keith Ridley was 17-for-29 for 111 yards and also totaled 15 rushing yards.

Defensively, Derek Omoregie led the Owls with eight tackles while Joe DiGello and Ray Magliozzi had seven each. Magliozzi led Southern with seven solo tackles. Quinton Haughton picked off a pass in the end zone midway through the third quarter, denying Shepherd another score. Joenel Figueroa had five tackles and one break-up.

The first quarter saw some back-and-forth jockeying before a Shepherd punt was downed at the Owls' one-yard. Backed into their end zone, Southern attempted a punt but a bad snap sailed out of bounds for the safety to give Shepherd a 2-0 lead. The Owls' tough luck on the play came after Southern's starting long snapper left the game with an injury.

Early in the second quarter, Shepherd's Malakai Brown made it 9-0 after a 55-yard run. The Rams took a 16-0 lead into the half when quarterback Lek Powell found Jeremiah Taylor for a 16-yard strike with less than 30 seconds left in the half.

Shepherd capped the scoring with a nine-play, 78-yard drive that saw Powell connect with Jack Rosnage to make it 23-0.

Southern will look to bounc back on Friday, Sept. 13 when it hosts American International for a "Friday Night Under The Lights" matchup at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
