SCSU Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Pace, 75-71

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball dropped a close match up against Pace, 75-71. The Owls drop to 10-9 on the year, 6-7 in Northeast-10 Conference Play.

Antonio Chandler led the way for the Owls with his fifth straight double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He also recorded two blocks and a steal. Albert Vargas scored 16, also grabbing four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Elijah Wood slid into the starting lineup and scored 10, and Cherif Diarra was two points short of a double-double, filling the stat sheet with eight points, 12 boards, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Sean James scored seven, and Isaac Hester scored six.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw neither team able to gain a lead larger than 10. After falling behind 2-0, the Owls jumped out to their first lead of the game behind baskets from Albert Vargas and Antonio Chandler. However, their lead only reached four before the Setters grabbed the lead back. Pace would hold the lead for the remainder of the half, but the Owls did not fall far behind, with Chandler continuing to dominate inside and the duo of Isaac Hester and Elijah Wood knocking down a few threes. Both defenses were strong, keeping scoring low for both squads. With 2:46 left in the half, Pace gained their largest lead,  going ahead 32-22. They would only hit one more shot in the half however, with the Owls ending the period on a 9-3 run that would bring the halftime score to 35-31 in favor of the Setters. Chandler ended with 14 points in the half.

The tight, defensive battle that occurred in the first half continued into the second, with a Hester three quickly cutting Pace's lead to a single possession. The Setters maintained the lead, however, and eventually extended it back to double figures. The lead would stay around 10 for a few minutes, before a quick 9-0 Owls run cut the lead down to two. Vargas, Diarra, and Sean James all contributed in the offensive outburst. A jumper from Wood tied the game at 50, and the Owls would regain the lead with 10:20 left off a layup from Chandler. Another three from Wood put Southern up five, but Pace bounced back and was quickly able to regain the lead with just over seven minutes left. Both offenses stalled, but four straight from Chandler and Diarra brought the deficit back down to one with five minutes left. The lead went back and forth again, with neither team gaining a multi-possession lead until under a minute left. However, Pace gained a one point lead with 1:25 left, and they would hold that until the end.

The Owls return to New Haven for their next game, playing Saint Michael's on Saturday, February 1st at 3:30 p.m.
