SCSU Men's Basketball Tops Saint Michael's, 85-73

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Saint Michael's, 85-73, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 11-9 overall and 7-7 in the NE10 while Saint Michael's dropped to 6-16 overall and 2-12 in conference play.

Antonio Chandler and Cherif Diarra both turned in double-double performances to lead five players in double figures. Chandler scored a game-high 20 points to go withi 10 rebounds while Diarra had 15 points and 11 boards with four assists and two blocks. Isaac Hester totaled 16 points while Albert Vargas had 13 and Christian McClease potted 11 on 3-of-6 shooting from long range. Vargas also led the Owls with six assists and two steals.



The two teams traded baskets to open the game en route to a 15-15 tie before the Owls used an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead, 23-17, with 10:56 to play in the first half. St. Michael's battled back to within a point, 30-29, before Southern used an 8-0 run to take a nine-point lead, 38-29, with 3:56 to play. Southern maintained that lead through the closing minutes of the first half, led by Hester's 11 points, to head to the break leading 46-37.

In the second half, Southern managed a double-digit lead through the opening minutes before using a 9-0 run to take a 20-point lead, 67-47, with 13:10 to go. Saint Michael's cut the lead in half with a 10-0 run to make it 67-57 with just under minutes to play. Southern used a 12-5 run to take a 17-point lead, 79-62, with 4:16 to go on a three from Hester. Southern was hang on for the 12-point win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire University.
