SCSU Women's Basketball Rolls To 70-55 Win Against Assumption For Fifth-Straight Victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball won its fifth-straight game with a 70-55 Northeast-10 Conference victory against Assumption at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in the NE10 while Assumption dropped to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Delaney Haines led all scorers with 25 points while Hope Fox had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Ally Sentance came off the bench to score 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Sentance also had four assists. Katie Williamson totaled 12 points in the Owls win.



The Owls defense cause havoc for the Greyhounds as Southern forced 26 turnovers, which they turned in to 36 points in the game. The Owls also outshot the Greyhounds, 40% (22-55) to 38.3% (18-47) as they held the lead against Assumption for the duration of the game.

Southern opened the game with a 9-2 run and outscored Assumption, 20-15, in the first quarter after hitting on 50% of its shots from the floor. Haines had six points on a pair of three-pointers while Williamson, Fox and Lyzi Litwinko all had four points in the frame. The Owls and Greyhounds played in close in the second quarter before Southern pulled away with a double-digit lead, 34-22, with 1:54 to go in the half. The Owls headed to halftime with a 37-24 lead thanks to an eight-point showing from Sentance in a 13-6 run to close the half.

Coming out of halftime, Haines scored on the Owls' first possession before Assumption counted with a 10-0 run to make it a five-point game, 39-24, with 7:01 left in the quarter. The Owls responded with a 7-0 run to push its lead back into double digits, 46-34, with 4:52 to go. Assumption knocked the Owls' lead down to eight points at the end of the quarter, 48-40, after outscoring the Owls 6-2 over the last two minutes.

The Owls went cold in the final quarter, converting on just 3-of-10 from the floor, but a 15-16 showing at the free throw line in the fourth was the difference. Assumption pulled within six points, 52-46, with 6:26 to play but Sentance gave the Owls a nine-point lead with a timely three-pointer. From there, the Owls closed the game on a 9-2 run in which they converted on 9-of-10 free throws including the last seven that they took in the game to seal the win.

Southern is back in action when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International College on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1:30 p.m. The Owls return home to host University of New Haven on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
