Lyzi Litwinko's Half-Court Three At The Buzzer Gives Owls 88-85 Win At AIC In Overtime

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Lyzi Litwinko's half-court shot at the buzzer in overtime gave Southern Connecticut women's basketball a thrilling 88-85 win against American International in Springfield, Mass. With the win, the Owls captured their sixth-straight victory to improve to 13-2 overall and 6-2 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 9-7 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
 
Litwinko came off the bench to score 11 points for the Owls – her most since joining the Owls. The transfer from NJIT scored seven of the Owls' 10 points in overtime for the win. Katie Williamson scored a career-best 27 points after she hit on 11-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Delaney Haines finished with 16 points and a career-best seven assists while Hope Fox had 12 points. Jillian Martin had a team-high five assists with six points – including a 2-for-2 day from three-point range – and Ally Sentance had four points and six rebounds off the bench. Rheyna Steinauer had eight points for the Owls.

Southern raced out to a 26-19 lead through the first quarter, with Katie Williamson leading the way for the Owls with eight points. The Owls and Yellow Jackets traded baskets for most of the first quarter, with Delaney Haines, Jillian Martin and Ally Sentance knocking down timely three-point buckets. AIC managed to move within two points, 21-19, with a minute to go before Sentance knocked down a three-pointer to make it a five-point game, followed by a steal by Marissa Lee that set up a Haines dish to Renza Milner for two points at the buzzer to give Southern the seven-point lead.

Coming out of first intermission, the Owls used a 13-4 run to take an 18-point lead, 41-23, with 3:17 to go before the half. Williamson once-again paced the Owls with six points in the run. AIC fought their way back with a 7-2 run that sent the game to the break with Southern leading, 43-30. Williamson's 12 points led Southern at halftime while Hope Fox post 10 in the first 20 minutes. As a team, Southern forced 12 turnovers which resulted in 22 points in the first half.

Coming out of the break, AIC outscored Southern, 16-4, over the quarters first five minutes to cut the Owls' lead to one, 47-46, before Williamson hit a jumper to push their lead to 49-46. AIC responded with a three-pointer to tie the game at 49-49 with 4:36 left in the quarter. It was the first tie since the first minute of the game between the two teams. Southern outscored AIC, 10-4, with Williamson accounting for six. The Owls ended the third with a 59-53 lead.

In the fourth, AIC used a seven point to take a 60-59 lead – its first of the game – with 7:45 to play. AIC continued to push, tying the game four times in the next five minutes before taking a 74-73 lead with 2:29 to play. With 1:01 to play, Williamson missed a jumper off an inbounds play, but came up with the steal and dish to Hope Fox to give Southern a 75-74 lead. After Sentance made 1-of-2 at the free throw line to give Southern a 76-74 lead, AIC tied it with a pair of free throws on the other end. Following a timeout, Haines knocked down a jumper to give the Owls the lead with five seconds to play but AIC tied it on the next possession to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, AIC opened with a hoop and a free throw after a foul on the play. Rheyna Steinauer and Litwinko then scored back-to-back hoops to give Southern an 82-81 lead with 3:18 to play. After a back-and-forth of missed attempts by both teams, Williamson converted 1-of-2 from the free throw line to give the Owls an 83-81 lead with 2:34 to play. After a shot clock violation on the Owls, AIC sank a pair of free throws to tie it again, 83-83.

Following a rebound by Sentance on a missed field goal by AIC, the Owls called a timeout with 37 seconds left in overtime. Coming out of the timeout, Litwinko drove through the paint and through the Yellow Jackets defense for the layup to give Southern a two-point lead with 22 seconds to play. AIC made a pair of free throws before Litwinko's half-court heave found the hoop to give the Owls the win at the buzzer.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 14 when it hosts University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
