SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Mercy, 70-56

NEW HAVEN, Conn. Southern Connecticut women's basketball improved to 2-0 with a 70-56 win against Mercy in a non-conference matchup at the Owls Tip-Off Classic at James Moore Field House.

Jillian Martin had a career-best 10 assists for her first double-double of her career after also chipping in 12 points in the Owls' win. Martin also added five rebounds in the game. Rheyna Steinauer led the Owls in scoring for the second-straight game with 17 points in just 22 minutes. Taeya Steinauer filled the box score with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a game-high six steals. Hope Fox had a season-best 11 points while Tish Blackwood had seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds.



The game was back-and-forth for the first half, with Mercy holding a lead after the first quarter, 16-14. Southern pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Mercy, 17-9, to head to the break with a 31-25 lead. Mercy once again made a run in the third quarter, outscoring the Owls, 19-17, to cut the Owls' lead to 48-44 heading to the last 10 minutes of play.

Early in the fourth quarter, Southern hung on to a three-point lead before outscoring Mercy over the next four minutes, 11-5, to take a 61-51 lead – it's largest of the game to that point. The Owls were 13-for-19 in the fourth quarter, pushing them to their second win in as many games to start the season.

Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 19 when it hosts American International for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House at 5:30 p.m.
