SCSU Women's Basketball Falls To AIC, 69-68

Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to American International, 69-68, in a game that went down to the wire. The loss was the Owls first of the season as they dropped to 2-1 overall. AIC improved to 3-0 with the win.

Jada Williams, a transfer from Temple University, had her best game as an Owl with a double-double after she totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds. Hope Fox had a game-high 13 rebounds with nine points and three assists. Jillian Martin had 12 points, six assists and four rebounds while Rheyna Steinauer finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Southern came out firing to the start the game as Hope Fox (4) and Jada Williams (3) combined to give the Owls a 7-2 lead less than two minutes into the game. AIC countered with a 14-7 run to take a 16-14 lead with just under five minutes to play. Both teams traded leads before AIC finished the first quarter with a 28-25 lead after converting on 62.5% from the floor and 5-of-7 from three-point range.

The second quarter was more of the same as the lead changed nine times in the first half. Neither team shot well over the closing minutes of the half, except for Jillian Martin who converted on three of her last four shots of the half on her way to 12 points in the game's first 20 minutes. Jada Williams had 10 points and four rebounds at the break while Rheyna Steinauer chipped in with nine. AIC led, 42-40, going into the break.

The third quarter saw Southern bounce back, outscoring the Yellowjackets, 17-13, to take a 57-55 lead heading into the final quarter. Rheyna Steinauer had seven of the Owls' 17 points while Iyanna Cotten came off the bench to score five.

Coming out for the fourth, Southern picked up its biggest lead of the night, 61-55, with 9:10 to play before AIC used a 9-1 run to tie the game at 64-62 with less than three minutes to play. After Tish Blackwood converted a free throw, she picked up an assist on a beautiful drive to the basket before dishing it to Cotton to tie the game at 64-64. A pair of free throws by Fox gave the Owls a 66-64 lead  with 1:05 to play. After AIC tied it, Taeya Steinauer scored the go-ahead basket, but AIC managed to knock down a three-pointer at the buzzer for the win.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Rockville Centre, N.Y. on Sunday, Nov. 23 to take on Molloy at 12 p.m. The Owls return home to host Saint Michael's on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 12 p.m. The game is the designated Kid's Game, with free admission to all in attendance.
