ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Molloy, 79-50, in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Owls improved to an overall record of 3-1 while the Lions dropped to an overall record of 1-4.
Hope Fox had a dominate performance against the Lions as she had a team-best of 25 points, made a career-best of six-out-of-seven three pointers, was 6-for-13 from the floor, grabbed a team-best of nine boards, had three assists and a team-best of five steals.
Taeya Steinauer had 13 points, as she grabbed four boards and had two steals.
Rheyna Steinauer and
Iyanna Cotten had eight points each, as Steinauer had five rebounds and three assists while Cotten had two steals and was 4-for-8 from the floor.
Jillian Martin and
Tish Blackwood both recorded six points for the Owls. Martin had a team-best of seven assists and was 2-for-4 from the floor and Blackwood grabbed seven rebounds, had three assists and a team-best of two blocks.
Maya Henry had five points and had two rebounds against Molloy.
In the first quarter, the Owls started off with a quick 2-0 lead with made free throws by
Jada Williams. After that, the Lions took the lead; however,
Rheyna Steinauer responded with a three-pointer, with an assist by
Tish Blackwood, to take the 8-7 lead back. Southern got their points from
Iyanna Cotten,
Hope Fox and
Taeya Steinauer to extend their advantage to eight; but, the Lions went on a run to end the quarter, 22-21, over the Owls.
In the second quarter,
Tish Blackwood and
Taeya Steinauer started the scoring for the Owls. Molloy wasn't going away in the start; nonetheless, a good jumper by
Hope Fox and a good layup by
Taeya Steinauer, fueled a 34-30 lead for Southern. It was a defensive battle for both teams as the quarter ticked down. Three points from
Maya Henry and a good jumper by
Iyanna Cotten helped the Owls take a nine-point lead into halftime.
In the third quarter,
Hope Fox continued to use her momentum to grow the Owls' lead as she hit back-to-back three-pointers in the first two minutes of play. Following that, the Lions hit a three-pointer of their own but Fox responded with five more points to extend the lead to 53-36.
Marisa Lee and
Iyanna Cotten had four points, and
Maya Henry had two points, which led Southern into the final quarter with a 65-43 advantage. Fox recorded 14 points for the Owls in just the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Steinauers scored the first points with
Rheyna Steinauer making a good layup in the paint and
Taeya Steinauer making back-to-back layups. After that,
Jada Williams and
Jillian Martin added to the Owls' total, to earn their largest lead of the game. Molloy put some points back on the board, as time ticked down but Southern Connecticut finished the game with a 79-50 victory and their third win of the season.
The Owls return home to host Saint Michael's on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 12 p.m. The game is the designated Kid's Game, with free admission to all in attendance.
