SCSU Women's Basketball Falls To Saint Michael's

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball to Saint Michael's, 86-68, in a non-conference matchup at James Moore Field House.  With the loss, Southern dropped to 3-2 overall while Saint Michael's improved to 3-1.

Rheyna Steinauer led the Owls with 19 points with six rebounds and three steals while Taeya Steinauer had 15 points while leading the Owls with five assists and four steals. Hope Fox finished with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals while Tish Blackwood had 10 points and seven rebounds.



Southern opened the game with a 17-5 run with Taeya Steinauer contributing 11 of her 15 first-half points in the first seven minutes of the game. Despite hitting 3-of-3 from the floor over the final three minutes, three turnovers gave Saint Michael's the advantage in the closing minutes, 9-8, as the Owls closed the first 10 minutes with a 24-14 lead.

The second quarter was all Purple Knights as they erased the Owls first-quarter lead and outscored Southern, 24-10, in the second frame. Saint Michael's used a 17-4 run over a four-minute stretch late in the quarter to take a 40-34 lead. Rheyna Steinauer dropped in a jumper at the buzzer to cut Saint Michael's lead to 40-36 heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Saint Michael's opened with another 17-4 run to take a 17-point lead, 57-40, in the first 4:54 of the quarter. Coming out of a timeout, the Owls hit on 5-of-6 from the floor to cut Saint Michael's lead to 11 points with just under two minutes to play. Despite the Owls' run, Saint Michael's led, 65-51, through the third quarter.

In the fourth, Hope Fox scored eight of her 12 points in the final 10 minutes of play as the Owls attempted to get back into the game. Saint Michael's outscored Southern, 21-17, down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

The two teams face each other again two more times, with both counting for the conference standings, on Jan. 24 in Colchester, Vt. and at home on Feb. 21. Southern is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 29 when they travel to College of Staten Island and return home on Wednesday, Dec. 3 to host Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
