SCSU Field Hockey Falls In OT Thriller To Adelphi In NE10 First Round

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut field hockey lost a heartbreaker to Adelphi, 4-3 in overtime, in its Northeast-10 Championship First Round matchup in Garden City, N.J. Southern led 2-0 and 3-2 in the game, but Adelphi came back twice to force overtime. With the loss, Southern's season ends with a record of 9-10.

Keana Criscuolo scored twice and also had an assist while Natalia Fiato scored the go-ahead goal late in the game. Taylor Leckey and Lindsey Onofrio both had assists.

Coming into the game, Adelphi was second in the conference with 16.7 shots-on-goal per game. Southern held the Panthers to 12 shots in the game, including just one in the first quarter and three in the half, thanks in large part to the shutdown defense of Ruby Webb, Kyla Hart-Perron and McKenzie Fairfax.

A year after leading the Owls with eight goals as a freshman in 2024, Criscuolo went scoreless through the Owls' first 14 games of this season.  The sophomore attacker turned it on as of late with six goals in her last five games played, including  a three-game scoring streak and two goals in each of her last two games.

Criscuolo's first goal came off a tip in front off of the goal on a blast by Leckey on a corner set. Her second goal came in the second half when she maneuvered around an Adelphi player in the Owls defensive half and took it coast-to-coast before beating another player and then the Panthers' goalie to give Southern a 2-0 lead.

The Owls two-goal lead was short-lived as Adelphi finally got on the board in the 40th minute of play. Up to that point of the game, Southern had held Adelphi to just two shots on goal midway through the third quarter. The Panthers tied it with just under 11 minutes to play. Adelphi received its fourth penalty corner of the period and converted on a rebound goal after Miller denied the first bid.

With just over four minutes to play, the Owls gained a penalty corner. Webb inserted the ball to Leckey who sent a pass to Onofrio to her right. Onofrio centered a pass to Criscuolo, who was cutting across the circle. Criscuolo's touch pass to Natalia Fiato set up the senior attacker for the go-ahead goal.

Adelphi tied it with a minute left and then pressured seconds later on a corner. Miller made a pair of saves on back-to-back shots before Fairfax ended the play with a defensive stop to send the game to overtime. Adelphi scored just under four minutes into the extra period for the win.
