SCSU Men's Basketball Defeats Saint Anselm, 93-71, In Final Regular Season Game

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Saint Anselm, 93-71, in its Northeast-10 Conference regular-season finale at the James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls finished the regular season at 16-10 overall and 12-8 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm dropped to 14-14 overall and 9-11 in conference play.

Southern clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship tournament and will host No. 11 seed Franklin Pierce for a First-Round matchup on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at James Moore Field House. Southern heads into the tournament with three-straight wins as well as wins in six of its last seven games.

The Owls saw a pair of double-doubles from Antonio Chandler and Albert Vargas highlighted by a 19-point, 18-rebound performance from Chandler while Vargas had 16 points and 11 assists. Cherif Diarra had a game-high 21 points with six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Sean James finished with 12 points.



Southern led for the entire game, save for an early 4-2 Saint Anselm lead, and dominated play on both ends of the court. Southern shrugged off the first three minutes of the game and ripped off a 16-3 run that gave them an 18-7 lead with 12:31 to play in the first half. Always the balanced offense, Southern saw six different players score in the run. The Owls led by as many as 16 points in the first half and cruised to a 42-30 lead at the break with Sean James' 12 points leading the Owls at halftime while as a team they knocked down seven three-pointers.

Southern took a 20-point lead, 61-41, with 13:43 to go in the game as Cherif Diarra had seven points and Chandler chipping in six in the opening minutes. Down the stretch, Diarra led the Owls with 15 points in the second half while Chandler had 14 and McClease chipped in nine.

Southern and Franklin Pierce are set to square off in the NE10 First Round on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at James Moore Field House. Tickets for the event will be $10 for adults, $5 for kids and seniors and free for NE10 students with an ID.
