SCSU Women's Basketball Falls To Saint Anselm, 80-75, In Overtime In Regular-Season Finale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball lost to Saint Anselm in overtime, 80-75, in its final regular-season game of the season at James Moore Field House. With the lose, the Owls dropped to 18-9 overall and 11-9 in Northeast-10 Conference play while Saint Anselm improved to 17-8 overall and 14-6 in the NE10. The Owls will enter the NE10 Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Pace on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.

Hope Fox led the Owls with a game-high 22 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Fox hit on 6-of-12 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Delaney Haines finished with 17 points while Katie Williams had 14 points and five rebounds as well as two steals. Jillian Martin led Southern with five assists and three steals.



Saint Anselm jumped out to an early lead with a game-opening 12-3 run over the first four minutes of the game. Southern responded with an 11-4 run to pull within a basket, 16-14, with 2:19 to go in the first. Lyzi Litwinko led the Owls' charge with seven points early on. Saint Anselm outscored the Owls over the next two minutes to head to the first intermission with a 23-18 lead.

Southern responded in the second quarter as they doubled-up the Hawks, 18-9. Southern opened with a 10-2 run with four different Owls scoring in the early burst to take a 28-25 lead after a pair of free throws by Rheyna Steinauer. Southern maintained the lead to head to the break with a 38-35 advantage.

Fox opened it up for the Owls in the second half, scoring 11 points in the third quarter as the Owls led 58-50 after the third. Despite only converting on 1-of-4 from long range, Southern was 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the quarter to hold the lead. With a 44-42 lead with 5:03 to play in the quarter, Southern went on a 12-6 run that gave them their largest lead of the game, 56-47, with 2:03 to go in the quarter. A pair of Maya Henry free throws to end the quarter gave Southern a 58-50 lead.

In the fourth, Southern held their eight-point lead through the first five minutes of the quarter, 66-58, before Saint Anselm scored on back-to-back possessions to cut Southern lead to four, 66-62. Martin then knocked down a three-pointer from in front of the Owls' bench to push Southern lead to 69-62 with 1:45 to go. Saint Anselm used a 9-2 run over that span to tie the game on a Katie Lemanski three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.

In overtime, the two teams traded trips to the free throw line to make it 73-73. Lemanski then scored twice to push Saint Anselm's lead to 77-73. Maya Henry, who was locked in defensively for the entire second half, came away with a big steal and a full-court rush for the layup to pull the Owls within a basket with under a minute to play. In the end, Saint Anselm converted on 3-of-4 from the free throw line to seal the victory.

Southern will host Pace in the NE10 Quarterfinals on Sunday, Mar. 2 at James Moore Field House at 1:30 p.m. Tickets for the event will be $10 for adults, $5 for kids and seniors and free for NE10 students with an ID.
