SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Assumption, 54-44

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Assumption, 54-44, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the NE10 while the Greyhounds dropped to 11-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Rheyna Steinauer led the Owls with 20 points while also grabbing seven rebounds while Tish Blackwood posted her second-straight double-double. The first-year Owl had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Owls' win. Taeya Steinauer finished with 10 points and five rebounds while Jillian Martin had a team-high six assists in the win.



An intense defensive battle from the start, Assumption led 13-9 through the first quarter of play. After trading baskets early on, Assumption pushed its lead to 10-4, before Rheyna knocked down a three to cut the Greyhounds lead in half. Assumption answered before Hope Fox hit a layup at the buzzer to pull the Owls back within two possessions.

The Greyhounds led through the first minute of the second quarter before Fox scored five-straight points to tie it at 16-16. Back-to-back three-pointers in the closing minutes from Ally Sentence and Taeya sent the game to the break tied at 22-22. The game remained tight through the start of the third quarter before Southern used an 8-3 run over the final 4:31 to take a 35-30 lead heading into the fourth.

The final quarter saw the Owls outscore the Greyhounds, 19-14, with Rheyna's 10-points in the last frame standing out as the difference in the win.

Southern finds itself on the road for the next two games as they travel to American International on Saturday, Jan. 17 and Saint Anselm on Monday, Jan. 19. The Owls return home on Wednesday, Jan. 21 to host Adelphi at 5:30 p.m.
