Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated American International College, 70-39 on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets dropped to an overall record of 10-6 and an NE10 record of 4-4 while the Owls improved to an overall record of 10-4 and an NE10 record of 5-1.
Tish Blackwood recorded her second double-double of the week and it was the third straight game that she has had a double-double. She recorded 18 points, as she was 7-for-11 from the floor, had a team-best of five assists and a block. In addition, she was dominant in the paint as she grabbed 22 boards, and is tied with Jackie Beathea for the third-most rebounds in a single game in program history. Also, 22 rebounds are the most rebounds recorded in a single game in the NE10 this season.
Taeya Steinauer had a team-best of 19 points, as she was 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, grabbed three boards and three steals.
Ally Sentance had 12 points, was 4-for-7 from the three-point line and from the floor, she grabbed four boards, had four assists and two steals.
Hope Fox had seven boards and a team-best of five assists while
Jillian Martin had four boards and three steals against the Yellow Jackets.
In the first quarter,
Taeya Steinauer got the scoring going for the Owls, from the free-throw line, to put them up 2-0. American International hit a three-pointer seconds later; however,
Tish Blackwood made back-to-back layups, and
Taeya Steinauer hit a jumper, to extend the lead to 9-3.
Rheyna Steinauer scored six points in the final two minutes, in addition to Blackwood and
Taeya Steinauer adding more points, Southern headed into the second up, 21-5.
In the second quarter,
Ally Sentance hit her first three-pointer of the game, with an assist from
Jillian Martin, to put the Owls up, 26-7. The Yellow Jackets started to get within reach of the Owls; nonetheless,
Rheyna Steinauer hit a made jumper, to extend the lead to 34-18, heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, American International put some points back on the board but tough baskets from Blackwood, Taeya and
Rheyna Steinauer and
Ally Sentance, helped the Owls, grow their advantage to 20 points, with two minutes left to play. The Yellow Jackets' defense put pressure on the Southern offense but a made layup by
Taeya Steinauer, with an assist by
Jillian Martin, allowed the Owls to hold a 19-point lead, going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Southern continued their strong momentum as they kept extending their lead.
Taeya Steinauer and Sentance both knocked down shots from beyond the arc. Blackwood hit a made free-throw and
Maya Henry scored five straight points, to seal the Owls' 70-39 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
The Owls will return to action on Monday, Jan. 19 at 1:30 pm in Manchester, N.H. in an NE10 matchup against Saint Anselm. Southern will return home to the Moore Field House on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 pm in an NE10 matchup against Adelphi.
