SCSU Women’s Basketball Defeats Saint Michael’s 59-50, for Seventh-Straight Victory

COLCHESTER, VT. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Saint Michael's, 59-50 in an NE10 matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Purple Knights dropped to overall record of 9-8 and an NE10 record of 4-5. With the win, the Owls extended their win streak to seven wins in a row and improved to an overall record of 13-4 and an NE10 record of 8-1.
 
Taeya Steinauer led the Owls with 16 points, as she was 7-for-13 from the floor, 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, grabbed six boards, had two steals and two blocks. Jillian Martin had 13 points, was 4-for-6 from the floor, a team-best of 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, had three assists and three rebounds. Rheyna Steinauer had 12 points, grabbed three boards, had two assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
Tish Blackwood had her sixth straight double-double and NE10 leading, seventh double-double overall, with a team-best of 12 rebounds and 11 points. In addition, she was 5-for-8 from the floor, had three assists, two blocks and two steals. Ally Sentance had six points, made a team-best of two three-pointers, three boards and three assists. Hope Fox had a team-best of four assists against the Purple Knights.


 
In the first quarter, the Purple Knights started off with a 5-0 run, but Taeya Steinauer scored the first jumper of the game for the Owls. Tish Blackwood, Taeya Steinauer and Hope Fox added points to help cut into Saint Michael's lead. Blackwood hit an and-one and a made jumper, to put the Owls up 12-10. Jillian Martin scored back-to-back points for Southern with time ticking down in the first as the Owls stayed in control of the lead, up 16-12.
 
In the second quarter, Saint Michael's got within two points of the lead of Southern; however, the Owls responded with a dominant 15-0 run with points from Rheyna Steinauer, Ally Sentance, Taeya Steinauer and Tish Blackwood. Jillian Martin hit a made three-pointer, to extend the Owls' lead to 38-18. After that, the Purple Knights put some points back on the board in the last three minutes of play, but Southern Connecticut stayed in control of the 41-24 lead.
 
In the third quarter, defense came up big for both teams until seven minutes in, when Taeya Steinauer made a layup in the paint, with an assist from Jillian Martin. Sentance and Martin added points to the Owls' total as Saint Michael's started their comeback; however, Southern continued to have the 48-35 advantage.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Purple Knights continued to make a comeback as they got within five points of Southern. Nonetheless, a made layup by Blackwood and four huge made free-throws by Martin, helped the Owls secure the 59-50 victory over Saint Michael's.
 
Southern Connecticut women's basketball will return home to the James Moore Field House for a two-game homestand, with an NE10 matchup against Saint Anselm on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 pm. On Saturday, Jan. 31, the Owls will take on Bentley in an NE10 matchup at 1:30 pm in the James Moore Field House.
