SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Anselm, 67-47, For 8th-Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Saint Anselm, 67-47, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls' eighth-straight win lifted them to 9-1 in the NE10 – it's best start in conference play since the Owls went 17 games before a loss during the 2006-07 season. The Owls went on to captured the NCAA Division II National Championship that season. Saint Anselm dropped to 8-7 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

Hope Fox led the Owls with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and second of her career. Fox knocked down 9-of-12 from the floor including 2-of-4 from three-point range. Rheyna Steinauer had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists while hitting three from long range while freshman standout Tish Blackwood had 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals.



Saint Anselm jumped out to an early lead, 14-4, halfway through the first quarter before Southern answered with an 8-4 run to head into the first break trailing, 16-12. The second quarter saw Saint Anselm push its lead to 12 points, 26-14, after a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of the frame. Southern stormed back with a 17-3 run and took its first lead of the game on a Jillian Martin layup at the buzzer. Fox grabbed the board on the play and fed Martin who took it the length of the court to give the Owls the lead into halftime.

The Owls opened the second half with a 14-0, which combined with 10 unanswered points to end the first half, gave the Owls a 24-0 run and a 16-point lead, 45-29, with five minutes to go in the quarter. Southern dominated the second half, outscoring the Hawks, 23-9 in the third, and 13-9 in the fourth on its way to a 20-point win on its home court. Additionally, the Owls had just seven turnovers to Saint Anselm's 20, which Southern turned into 25 points on the opposite end.

Southern now sets sights on nationally-ranked Bentley in a matchup of the NE10's top-two teams on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
