SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Saint Anselm

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to Saint Anselm, 80-67, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the NE10 while first-place Saint Anselm improved to 16-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play.

Justice Ellison had his fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds, as well as three assists. Cherif Diarra turned in his team-best eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds as well as a team-high six assists. Malik Banks tallied 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a 2-for-3 day from three-point range.  

Diarra now stands at 977 points and 980 rebounds for his career, as well as 256 assists, 170 blocks and 119 career steals. He's on pace to become just the fourth player in program history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and the first in program history to add 250 assists, 150 blocks and/or 100 career steals.



Despite shooting a team-wide 50% (30-60) from the floor, the Owls hit on just 4-of-15 from three-point range while the Hawks converted on 11-of-27 from long range. Southern was also 3-for-13 from the free throw line while Saint Anselm converted 11-of-17.

Both teams played neck-and-neck over the game's first 10 minutes as the score stood at 16-16, with Ellison (six points) dueling Saint Anselm's Josh Morrissette (five points). Saint Anselm used a 12-3 run to take a 28-19 lead with 7:33 to play. Southern played back at the Hawks and pulled within a point, 30-29, after a 10-2 run. The Hawks then used a 12-4 run over the final 4:12 of the half as they head into the break with a 42-33 lead.

Ellison, Banks and Diarra combined for 22 points as the Owls outscored Saint Anselm, 29-20, over the first 12 minutes of the half to tie the game at 62-62 with 7:01 to play. Down the stretch, the Hawks outscored the Owls, 18-5, over the final 5:43 to hold onto the win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 when it hosts Bentley for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 3:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
