Makenzi Pastreck's 14 Saves Highlight 0-0 Tie Against Nationally-Ranked Bentley

NEW HAVEN, Conn.— Owls goalkeeper Makenzi Pastreck turned in an all-time performance in goal to keep Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer alive in a tight battle against nationally-ranked Bentley.

Pastreck made 14 saves — the most in a shutout in program history — as SCSU and Bentley played to a 0-0 draw in a Northeast 10 Conference women's soccer matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the tie, the Owls move to 6-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in NE10 play while Bentley is now 8-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.

Pastreck's 14-save effort is the most by an Owl since Allie Smith had 14 saves against Stonehill on Nov. 5, 2019, and it is the most saves ever recorded in a shutout by an SCSU goalkeeper. Pastreck played all 90 minutes and faced 19 total shots, 14 on target, to earn the clean sheet.

Bentley controlled the attack for much of the night, outshooting Southern Connecticut 19-9 and putting 14 shots on goal to SCSU's three. The Falcons held a 13-4 advantage in shots in the second half alone as Pastreck made 10 saves after halftime.

Pastreck was tested early and late. She denied Bentley in the second minute, then twice in the opening 13 minutes to keep the match scoreless. Her busiest stretch came after the break, when Bentley pressed for a winner.

From the 48th to the 65th minute, Pastrek made six saves, including consecutive stops in the 54th and 55th minutes and a bottom-center save in the 58th minute.

Southern Connecticut generated chances despite being outshot. SCSU had five shots in the first half and four in the second, with three on target. Norret, LaPerle, Bishop, Julia Salley, Jamie Greenman and Bella LaPerle all put attempts toward goal, but the Owls couldn't break through against Bentley's keeper.

For Southern Connecticut, the point keeps the Owls unbeaten at home in conference play while leaning on a defensive performance that has become a hallmark under pressure.

The shutout is the signature performance of Pastreck's season and now stands alone in the SCSU record book for most saves in a shutout. Surpassing 14-save games that previously ended in draws or losses, Pastrek's 14-save shutout rewrites the program standard for goalkeepers keeping a clean sheet.

Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Mercy and again on Oct. 17 at Saint Anselm. The Owls return home on Tuesday, Oct. 20 to host Adelphi at 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
