SCSU Football Falls To Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State showed fight late, but an early deficit and pressure up front proved too much in a 25-14 loss to Assumption on Saturday at Jess Dow Field.

Owls quarterback Brandon Jorgensen finished 12-of-24 for 148 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Andres Perez led the receiving corps with four catches for 41 yards and a score, while John Amaning rushed for 32 yards on 15 carries. Southern Connecticut's defense forced two interceptions from Alex Perez and Emeka Yearwood and got 10 tackles from Jordan Eli.

The Owls (4-2, 2-1 NE10) fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter after Assumption (3-3, 3-0 NE10) scored on a 13-yard touchdown and a 32-yard field goal. Southern Connecticut answered in the second quarter. Mike Kinik capped an 11-play, 54-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, with Daniel Benzi's extra point cutting the lead to 10-7 with 4:47 left in the half.

Momentum looked like it was shifting SCSU's way when Emeka Yearwood tipped a Greyhound pass deep in the red zone that was caught by Alex Perez on the Owls' 1-yard line. Played tilted back Assumption's way when the Owls were called for a safety to give the Greyhounds a 12-7 lead at the break.

Assumption extended its lead in the third quarter on a 30-yard field goal and a 12-yard scoring run. The Greyhounds, who improved to 3-0 in NE10 play, added another field goal from 22 yards early in the fourth for a 25-7 advantage.

SCSU kept battling. Jorgensen connected with Perez for an 18-yard touchdown with 1:49 remaining, finishing an eight-play, 70-yard drive to make it 25-14.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 24 when they travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley. The Owls return home to host Franklin Pierce on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
