SCSU Volleyball Drops NE10 Match To AIC, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball battled through four competitive sets but dropped a 3-1 decision to American International College in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Pelz Gym.

AIC (19-2, 4-1 NE10) defeated SCSU (13-7, 2-3 NE10) 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 in their second matchup of the season. Despite the loss, Southern Connecticut showed resilience on both sides of the ball, finishing with nine total blocks and eight service aces — both higher than AIC's totals.

Senior outside hitter Kerrigan Habing led the Owls with a team-high 15 kills on 49 attacks, hitting .245, while adding 15 digs, three aces and three blocks for a match-high 20 points for SCSU.

Sydney Bennett added nine kills and a team-best five blocks, finishing with 12.5 points. Bennett hit .148 and provided a strong presence at the net, combining with Habing, Katie Bardak and others for 12 block assists.

Kimi Mitchell directed the offense with 36 assists and added six kills on .263 hitting, along with seven digs and a block. The setter's distribution helped five different Owls record at least four kills. Katie Bardak contributed seven kills and three blocks, while Mianna Brown chipped in seven kills on .208 hitting. Marisabelle Sias added four kills off the bench.

Defensively, Sarah Henault recorded 14 digs and two aces, while Alyssa Ferreira tallied 12 digs and an ace. Victoria Pascual added seven digs, and Camilla Fernandez posted eight digs and two aces.
Habing's all-around performance kept Southern Connecticut within striking distance in every set. She delivered crucial kills late in the second set to help the Owls even the match at 1-1.

Southern Connecticut opened strong in the first set, building an early 9-3 lead behind Ferreira's serving run that included an ace and back-to-back blocks. AIC responded with a 10-3 run to tie and eventually take the set 25-22 despite 12 kills from SCSU.

The Owls answered in the second set. Trailing 15-11, Habing served three consecutive aces during a five-point surge to tie the set at 16-16. SCSU closed on a 4-1 run, capped by back-to-back kills from Bennett, to win 25-23. The Owls hit .179 in the set with 13 kills.

AIC regained control in the third, hitting .289 with 18 kills. SCSU led early at 6-1 after a Henault service run, but the Yellow Jackets used a 7-1 run midway through the set to pull ahead.

In the fourth, Southern Connecticut again started fast, leading 11-4 behind Fernandez's two aces and strong net play. AIC slowly chipped away, tying the set at 19-19 on an SCSU attack error before closing on a 6-3 run to secure the match.

With four games remaining on its schedule, Southern will complete their NE10 slate at Saint Michael's on Saturday, Oct. 24 and at Southern New Hampshire on Thursday, Oct. 29. The Owls wrap up the regular season at home against Pace on Tuesday, Nov. 3 for Serve and Honor Night Recognizing Veterans, Military, and First Responders. The Owls will then host Franklin Pierce for Senior Night on Friday, Nov. 6. Both games at Pelz Gym are set for a 5 p.m. start.
