Keana Criscuolo's Hat Trick Leads SCSU Field Hockey To 4-0 NE10 Opener Win Against AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Keana Criscuolo recorded her second hat trick of the season and Rachel Miller posted a seven-save shutout as Southern Connecticut State University field hockey opened Northeast 10 Conference play with a 4-0 victory over American International College at Jess Dow Field.

The win moved the Owls to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the NE10. AIC dropped to 2-4 and 0-1 in conference play.

Lindsay Onofrio added her first goal of the season for Southern Connecticut while Criscuolo had the second hat trick of her career. Her first hat trick came Sept. 13 in a 3-2 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas. On Saturday, she scored in each of the final three quarters to break open what was a scoreless game after the first 15 minutes.

Miller improved to 3-1 in net for the Owls, recording her first shutout of the season. Miller turned away all seven shots she faced, including five in the second half as AIC pressed to get back into the game.
Southern Connecticut outshot AIC 18-10 and held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Owls also earned eight penalty corners to the Yellow Jackets' five and did not allow a corner in the fourth quarter while protecting the lead.

After a scoreless first quarter in which the teams combined for just three shots, Onofrio put the Owls in front for good. She broke through at the 19:42 mark of the second quarter on a corner set that saw Ruby Webb feed Avery Vaccaro at the top of the circle before Vaccaro moved the ball to Onofrio on the wing. Onofrio's drag flick beat AIC's keeper to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Both Webb and Kaiya Mercier had two assists in the game, including Mercier's team-best 7th and 8th of the season.

The goal seemed to spark the Southern Connecticut attack. Just over six minutes later, Criscuolo doubled the lead when she took a long pass from Webb, dribbled around the keeper and gave Southern a 3-0 lead. Southern Connecticut carried that momentum into the third quarter.

Criscuolo completed the hat trick early in the fourth when Mercier found her out of a scramble in front of the goal to give the Owls the four-goal lead.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Pace on Tuesday, Oct. 6 and then head to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm on Friday, Oct. 9. The Owls return home to face Bentley on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
