SCSU Men's Swimming & Diving Places Third At Fairfield Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State men's swimming and diving placed third at the Fairfield Invite this weekend, with Alex Kim winning the 50-meter butterfly to highlight a 491-point effort.
The Owls finished behind host Fairfield (919.5 points) and Bridgeport (778) and ahead of Manhattan (263.5) in the four-team men's meet held Oct. 2-3 at Fairfield University.

Kim, a sophomore, delivered SCSU's lone individual victory of the weekend, winning the 50 fly in 25.96 seconds. He edged Fairfield's Nicholas Green (26.26) and Bridgeport's Alp Yalikli (26.37) for the title. Kim added a fifth-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 53.83, the top SCSU finisher in that event.

The Owls showed strength in breaststroke and distance freestyle.

Sophomore Luke Newcomb finished second in the 50 breaststroke in 30.08, just .04 off the winning time from Fairfield's Balazs Ament. Senior Spencer Bridgman was ninth in 31.89 and Jack Simmons 11th in 32.74. Senior Ben Frazer led SCSU in the 100 breast in fifth in 1:08.39, with Travis Scott 11th in 1:11.52.

In distance, freshman Samuel Whitaker placed fifth in the 800 freestyle in 9:13.06 and sophomore Lucas Quiroga was sixth in 9:18.15. James Custer added a ninth-place finish in the 400 freestyle in 4:40.13.
Frazer led SCSU's sprint freestyle group with a sixth-place finish in the 50 free in 24.77. Richie Hall was ninth in 26.01 and Ian Scott-Sheldon 12th in 27.23.

Hall paced the Owls in the 200 individual medley, finishing 11th in 2:20.55, with Newcomb 16th in 2:21.97. Quiroga also placed 13th in the 100 fly in 1:03.63 and Alexander Ahrens was 14th in 1:04.08.
Freshman Christian Garcia led three Owls in the 50 backstroke, finishing eighth in 29.35. Daniel Lazar was 10th in 29.73 and Scott-Sheldon 11th in 31.04. In the 100 back, junior Kris Janney was ninth in 1:02.71 and Newcomb 12th in 1:05.65.

In the 200 freestyle, Ahrens finished 11th in 2:02.87 and Scott was 14th in 2:04.27, with Janney 16th in 2:05.51.

SCSU was solid in relays. The A team of Scott, Lazar, Frazer and Kim finished fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:39.13, while Janney, Whitaker, Quiroga and Garcia were sixth in 3:51.51.

In the 200 medley relay, the Owls took fourth in 1:50.49 behind Lazar, Frazer, Garcia and Kim, with the B team of Scott, Korbin Conliffe, Bridgman and Newcomb seventh in 1:55.78.

On the diving boards, sophomore Nathan Ivans scored in both events, placing fourth in 1-meter with 173.20 points and fourth in 3-meter with 156.50. Freshman Tyler Patchkofsky was fifth in both events with 127.65 and 124.00.
