SCSU Volleyball Battles Back But Falls Short At Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — Southern Connecticut State fought back from two sets down but could not complete the comeback falling to Adelphi 3-2 in Northeast 10 Conference play at Adelphi's Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y.

The Panthers (10-9, 1-1 NE10) held on for a 16-14 win in the fifth set after SCSU (12-5, 1-1 NE10) had rallied with 25-16 wins in the third and fourth. Adelphi took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-23.
Sydney Bennett led Southern Connecticut with 14 kills on .440 hitting and a team-high six blocks for 17 points. Marisabelle Sias added 12 kills without an error on 23 attempts to hit .522, and Kerrigan Habing posted 11 kills, 11 digs and six blocks.

Setter Kimi Mitchell totaled 48 assists, seven kills on .462 hitting, 11 digs and three blocks for 10 points. Sarah Henault led the defense with 17 digs. The Owls finished with more kills, 63-55, and hit .315 for the match, but were undone by 10 service aces allowed and 10 reception errors in the five-set loss.

Southern Connecticut opened slowly, hitting just .105 in the first set with 11 kills against seven errors while Adelphi hit .231.  The Owls improved to .216 in the second set but could not hold a late lead. Tied at 21, Adelphi used a four-point surge sparked by two service aces from Reese Brunken to take the set, 25-23, and a 2-0 match lead.

Facing a sweep, SCSU responded with its cleanest volleyball. The Owls hit .393 in the third with 13 kills and two errors and held Adelphi to .219. A 5-0 closing run fueled by two Sias aces and three straight kills from Habing sealed a 25-16 win and extended the match.

Southern Connecticut was even better in the fourth, hitting .500 with 16 kills. Henault opened with a 7-2 run that forced three straight Adelphi attack errors against the Owl block. Mianna Brown provided a spark off the bench and finished with nine kills on .692 hitting and 2.5 blocks, including back-to-back kills to push the lead to 18-9. Brown and Mitchell closed the set with consecutive kills for another 25-16 win to force a fifth.

The decider was tight throughout. The Owls hit .588 with 11 kills and one error, but Adelphi hit .412 and delivered late from the service line. SCSU took a 7-4 lead after two Bennett kills, and the teams traded sideouts to 13-13.

Brown gave Southern Connecticut a match point at 14-13 with a kill from Mitchell, but Adelphi's Isabella Assaley answered with back-to-back service aces — her only two of the match — to flip the score to 15-14. Bigelow then closed it with a kill off Assaley to end the comeback bid, 16-14.

Southern Connecticut held decisive advantages in blocks, 14-2, and assists, 61-53, and out-dug Adelphi 63-60, but Adelphi's 10 aces to SCSU's five proved costly. Katie Bardak added eight kills and 9.5 points for the Owls, while Camilla Fernandez served two aces.

Southern returns to action on Friday, Oct. 9 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption in a NE10 matchup at 5 p.m.
