SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Pace, 60-56

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to Pace, 60-56, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, Southern dropped to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in NE10 play while Pace improved to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

Cherif Diarra joined Southern Connecticut men's basketball's 1,000-point club with a basketball with 4:11 to play in the game. The Owls senior forward finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. His two blocks give him 175 for his career, while his career rebound total now stands at 996. Justice Ellison led the Owls with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor with three steals. Malik Banks finished with nine points, six assists and three steals.



Southern opened the game with an 8-0 run before Pace responded with a 10-4 run to pull within a basket with 12:59 to go in the first half. Southern answered with a 10-2 stretch in which they took a 22-12 lead with 8:33 to play. Down the stretch, both teams played even, 12-12, to head into halftime. led by as many as 14 points, 34-20, in the first half and went to the break with a 34-24 lead. Christian McClease hit on all three three-point attempts he took in the first half on his way to a team-best nine points, while Cherif Diarra and Justice Ellison had eight points, each.

The second half saw Pace flip the plot on the Owls as the Setters outscored Southern, 36-22, in the second half on its way to the four-point win. Southern led by 10, 46-36, with 11:42 to play. Pace used a 12-2 run to tie it, 48-48, with 8:30 left in regulation. Both teams traded baskets before Pace took the lead for good, 57-56, with 2:23 to play and then pushed the lead out of reach with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining.

Southern will be on the road for its next two games which sees the Owls head to Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, Feb. 7 to face Southern New Hampshire before a trip to Worcester, Mass. to face Assumption on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The Owls return home on Saturday, Feb. 14 to host American International.

Join Southern Connecticut State University's Athletic Department for Pride Day on Saturday, Feb. 14, a celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, inclusion, and community at the James Moore Field House! This special event will take place during SCSU's basketball doubleheader against American International College and will feature a vibrant halftime performance by Bleach the Drag Queen.
 
The afternoon tips off with the Women's Basketball game at 1:30 PM, followed by the Men's Basketball game at 3:30 PM. Fans attending either (or both!) games can enjoy the excitement of competition alongside a dynamic drag performance that brings energy, joy, and visibility to the celebration.
