SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Adelphi

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University softball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Adelphi, winning the first game, 7-3, before falling, 7-6, in the nightcap. With the split, the Owls go to 19-19 overall and 12-16 in the NE10 while Adelphi goes to 27-15 overall and 23-5 in conference play.

Izzy Ingersoll was 4-for-7 with five RBI in the doubleheader while Olivia Young was 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Nadia Cestari drove in three runs while Christina DeNovellis was 3-for-5 with two triples and four runs scored.

With 13 runs in the doubleheader, Southern now has 213 runs scored in 38 games. Their 213 runs are the most at SCSU since the 2013 team scored 217 runs in a season. Additionally, Young's four hits give her 32 for the year as she joins Sophia Angiolini (39), Ingersoll (49), Brianna Pearson (41), Karley Austin (41) and Gianna Iaquinto (38) to give the Owls six hitters with 30-or-more hits in a season since 2012. That team featured eight players through 56 games.



Game 1: SCSU 7, Adelphi 3
Olivia Young was 2-for-2 with a RBI, Gianna Iaquinto was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Nadia Cestari drove in three runs to lead the Owls to a 7-3 come-from-behind win against Adelphi. Karley Austin delivered the game-winning RBI and Ashley Lewis picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief.

Southern took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats when Brianna Pearson hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line that scored Izzy Ingersoll. Adelphi scored twice in the 2nd inning to take a 2-1 lead. In the 4th, Christina DeNovellis tripled down the right field line and then scored to tie it at 2-2 on a double by Young. Adelphi regained the lead in the top of the 5th, 3-2.

In the bottom of the 6th, Southern pushed five runs across the plate on four hits to take a 7-3 lead. DeNovellis walked to lead off the inning before moving to second on Young's sacrifice bunt. Ingersoll then drove DeNovellis in with a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3. Iaquinto singled to put runners on first and second before Pearson was retired for the second out of the inning.

Austin then lined a single through the right side of the infield to bring Ingersoll in from second and give the Owls a 4-3 lead. After Austin stole second, Sophia Angiolini worked her third walk of the day before Cestari blasted a double to the right-center field gap to bring all three runners home.

Kate Nickerson took the no-decision after getting the start on the mound. Nickerson held the Panthers to three runs on six hits over five innings. Lewis came on in relief in the 6th inning and pitched two blank frames while giving up just two hits to improve to 8-7 on the year.

Game 2 – Adelphi 7, SCSU 6
Ingersoll was 3-for-3 with four RBI while DeNovellis was 2-for-3 with another triple and two runs scored. Olivia Young was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. Giselle DeLutri took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, while striking out nine. She now has 108 strikeouts for the year

Adelphi jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, Cestarti delivered a two-out single after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Cheyenne LaTouche was then hit by a pitch before DeNovellis singled to center to score Cestari and put the Owls on the board. Young followed with a base hit to score LaTouche and Ingersoll singled through the right side of the infield to score DeNovellis and give the Owls a 3-2 lead.

In the 4th, Adelphi erupted for five runs to take a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, LaTouche walked to lead off the inning before the next batter was retired and Young singled to right. Ingersoll then lined a two-out double to left to score both runners and cut Adelphi's lead to 7-5.

In the bottom of the 6th, DeNovellis blasted her second triple of the afternoon to lead off the inning before Young walked. Ingersoll then drove in her fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to pull the Owls within a run, 7-6.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley for a four-game NE10 series on Apr. 25-26. Southern then concludes the regular season against Assumption on May 1-2 at Pelz Field with Senior Day slated for the start of the Owls' doubleheader against the Greyhounds on Saturday, May 2.
