SCSU Volleyball Opens 2026 With Two Wins on Day One in Florida

Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. – Southern Connecticut State women's volleyball opened the 2026 season 2-0 Friday at the Rollins Invitational, rallying from 0-2 down to beat St. Mary's (Texas) 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-10) in the morning before topping Concord University 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18) in the afternoon to sweep day one at Warden Arena.
 
In the opener against St. Mary's, the Owls were led by three returners who fueled the reverse sweep. Sydney Bennett paced the attack with 17 kills on .419 hitting (17-4-31) for 18.0 points, Kerrigan Habing posted a near triple-double impact with 15 kills, four aces, 15 digs and a match-high 19.5 points, and setter Kimi Mitchell orchestrated the offense with 43 assists, 12 digs and six kills on .357 for a double-double. Southern finished with advantages in kills (56-44), aces (9-4), assists (54-36) and digs (77-64) while holding the Rattlers to .097.
 
SCSU dropped the first two sets despite competitive play. St. Mary's took set one 25-23 on a late kill from Laurene Robinson (18 kills, 18 digs) and set two 25-21 behind a .314 clip. Southern responded in set three with a five-point run behind Alyssa Ferreira's serve to lead 8-1 after a Victoria Pascual ace, closing 25-18 while holding St. Mary's to -.031. Momentum carried into set four as Sarah Henault's serving sparked a four-point surge and Camilla Fernandez added an ace at 12-7 in a .250 hitting set (14-4-40) for a 25-15 win. In the fifth, Henault forced two straight Robinson errors for a 4-1 lead and Mitchell and Maria Martinez sealed it, with Habing's kill at 14-9 setting up a final Rattler error for 15-10.
 
Southern kept rolling against Concord, rebounding from a 20-25 first-set loss to win three straight 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 behind a balanced attack and dominant service game. Habing led all players with 17 kills (17-11-49, .122), six aces, 14 digs and 24.0 points in four sets, while Bennett added 12 kills on .250 (12-5-28, .429 K%) for 16.5 points with three solo blocks and three block assists for six total blocks. Marisabelle Sias provided efficiency with nine kills on .304 (9-2-23, .391 K%) and six digs, and Martinez matched her with nine kills on .280 (9-2-25, .360 K%) with three block assists for 10.5 points. Sias' .304 clip was the best on the team.
 
The day one sweep showcased depth and serving. Against St. Mary's, Henault anchored the defense with a match-high 23 digs, Ferreira added 17 digs, and Sarah Stark finished with seven kills and two blocks. Against Concord, Habing's six aces powered the 3-1 comeback that gave SCSU four players with nine or more kills.
 
Southern (2-0, 0-0 NE10) continues the Rollins Invitational Saturday against Ursuline (10 a.m.) and host Rollins (2:30 p.m.). The 2-0 start is the program's first since 2023 and the first opening-day doubleheader sweep since 2021.
