SCSU Athletics & Recreation and Office of DEI Team Up to Celebrate Community

Throughout the 2026-27 academic year, Southern Connecticut State University Athletics and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will celebrate the identities, cultures, histories and communities that make up SCSU.

Through games connected to heritage and affinity observances the Owls, under the guidance of Director of Athletics & Recreation Terrance Jones and and Assistant Athletic Trainer / NCAA Diversity & Inclusion Designee Dr. Mercedes Himmons, will celebrate our community, strengthen connection and build Owl pride. These events are presented in collaboration with SCSU's Multicultural Center, the SAGE Center, student clubs and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.).

FALL 2026
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
Tuesday, October 20, 2026, 5 p.m., Pelz Gymnasium
SCSU Volleyball vs. American International College

In partnership with SCSU Athletics, DEI celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring the cultures, histories, contributions and pride of our Hispanic and Latino/a/e/x communities.
Join us as we bring Southern together through sport, culture and community. The night will feature a promotional video highlighting our volleyball team, a performance by OLAS and Pelz Gymnasium decorated with flags representing our Hispanic and Latinx communities.

The first 100 fans will receive a free T-shirt featuring the phrase "Somos Owls" — We're Owls.

Global Owl Night
Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, 7 p.m., Jess Dow Field
SCSU Men's Soccer vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College

SCSU Athletics and DEI host a Global Game celebrating the cultures, identities and traditions represented across campus and within the global game of soccer. Together, we celebrate the many places and communities that make SCSU home.

The night will feature a promotional video highlighting our men's soccer team and Jess Dow Field decorated with flags representing our F-1 international student community.

The first 100 fans will receive a free T-shirt featuring the phrase "Global Owls." Food trucks will be available for attendees.

SPRING 2027
Black Excellence Game
Date: To be announced

In celebration of Black History Month, Southern Athletics and DEI will recognize Black excellence, achievement, culture and community. This game celebrates the contributions of Black students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members who continue to shape Southern and beyond.

Women's Empowerment Game
Date: To be announced

In celebration of Women's History Month, Southern Athletics and DEI will honor the leadership, achievements and contributions of women across our campus and communities. Join us in celebrating the women who lead, inspire, compete and create change at Southern.

PRIDE Night
Date: To be announced

Southern Athletics and DEI will host PRIDE Night to celebrate Southern's LGBTQ+ community and affirm a campus where everyone can participate, compete and thrive as their authentic selves. Join us for a night of pride, community and Owl spirit.
