SCSU Women's Soccer Bests St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State women's soccer used a three-goal flurry in the first half to roll past St. Thomas Aquinas College, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls move to 3-0-2, while the Spartans fall to 0-1. 

Olivia Morrissette, Elizabeth Bishop and Gigi Pena each scored for the Owls. The win was SCSU's third shutout of the season.

Morrissette opened the scoring in the 31st minute. The sophomore finished her first goal of the season at 30:39 off an assist from Isabella LaPerle to give Southern Connecticut a 1-0 lead.

The lead doubled just over a minute later. Bishop, who entered the match leading the team in goals, netted her fourth of the year at 31:47 on a feed from Mia Radzik to make it 2-0.

Pena closed the scoring at 38:04. The freshman forward came off the bench and converted her first goal as an owl, again assisted by LaPerle, who finished with two assists on the afternoon.

Southern Connecticut controlled play from the opening whistle and never allowed St. Thomas Aquinas to attempt a shot.

The Owls outshot the Spartans 39-0 and put 25 shots on goal. SCSU also held a 16-0 advantage in corner kicks. STAC goalkeeper Catalena Robson made 21 saves in 90 minutes to keep the deficit at three.

SCSU had 11 corners and 24 shots in the first half alone, and added 15 shots after halftime. Eleven different Owls recorded at least one shot on goal.
Frida Norret led the Owls with eight shots and five on goal in 74 minutes. Julia Hargraves added five shots and three on goal, while Gracie Sanders had four shots and three on target.

LaPerle, a midfielder, finished with two shots on goal and two assists in 62 minutes on her senior day. Radzik recorded an assist in 37 minutes off the bench.

Morrissette had three shots and scored on her only shot on goal in 60 minutes as a substitute. Bishop had three shots, two on goal, and a goal in 74 minutes.

In goal, Southern Connecticut split the shutout. Makenzi Pastreck started and played the first 45 minutes, and Olivia Iafrate played the final 45 minutes. Neither was required to make a save as the SCSU defense held STAC without a shot attempt.

SCSU moved quickly after halftime to put the game away. Norret forced a save less than two minutes into the second half, and the Owls generated back-to-back corner kicks before the 50th minute. Morrissette, Norret, Bishop and LaPerle all put shots on goal in the second half, but Robson made 10 saves after the break.
Southern Connecticut continued to press late, with Pena, Madelyn Schmidt and Hargraves all forcing saves in the final 15 minutes. The Owls earned their final corner at 79:30 and closed the match with two more shots in the 83rd and 90th minutes.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Wednesday Sept. 16 when they host Queens College for a non-conference match up at 7 PM at Jess Dow Field.
