John Weiss ’15 returned to Southern Connecticut State University football in 2020 as an assistant coach working with the offensive line while also serving as the department’s Athletics Academic Support Specialist. He was named Offensive Coordinator for the 2023 season, where he has overseen the continued growth and production of the Owls’ offense.
Since taking over, the Owls have led the league in both passing and rushing, reflecting a balanced and highly productive offensive attack. Under Weiss’s direction, the SCSU offense has emphasized a physical run game paired with an efficient passing system, contributing to consistent offensive success and year-over-year gains in total production and scoring within conference play. Under Weiss, multiple players have earned All-Conference and All- New England accolades as well as Tylon Papallo (WR) receiving Don Hansen All-American Honorable Mention.
Weiss joined SCSU after coaching at Rutgers University football, where he served as an offensive assistant in 2018 working with the offensive line before coaching the tight ends in 2019. During his time at Rutgers, Weiss played a key role in the development of Jonah Jackson, who earned All-Big Ten honors and was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Jackson has since gone on to earn Pro Bowl recognition as one of the NFL’s top interior linemen.
Prior to Rutgers, Weiss spent two seasons on the staff at University of Nebraska football as an offensive assistant, working with the running backs and tight ends.
Before Nebraska, Weiss worked at DePaul Catholic High School football in Wayne, New Jersey, where he coached the offensive line, defensive line, and served as special teams coordinator.
A former player at SCSU, Weiss competed in a variety of roles including tight end, fullback, offensive line, and special teams.
Weiss is a graduate of DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, NJ.
