NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team and senior Anna Pleban (Seymour, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team have been named the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Mallory set a new career-high for the second time in a row with 30 points as No. 11 SCSU won its tenth straight game, 78-64, at Adelphi on Feb. 15. It was the fourth straight game where the rookie, who went a perfect 11-for-11 from the foul line, tallied 20 or more points. He was also named the NE-10 Spalding Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
Pleban, the swimming and diving co-captain, competed in the Metropolitan Conference Championship meet. The senior came in second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.84, and won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.22. She also helped multiple relay teams achieve high placings.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
