NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and senior Michael Lee (New London, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Coward was tabbed as the Most Outstanding Field Performer at this past weekend’s Northeast-10 Championship as the Owls finished second as a team. She set a new NE-10 record with a toss of 13.35 meters to win the shot put event. Coward also placed second in the weight throw with a heave of 15.50 meters.
Lee was named Most Outstanding Field Performer at this past weekend’s NE-10 Championship and also helped the Owls to a second-place team finish. He broke a NE-10 record in the triple jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15.21 meters to win that event. Lee also finished third in the long jump, as his leap of 7.03 meters was also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
