NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women's outdoor track and field team and senior Michael Cameron (Hartford, Conn.) of the men's outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Both student-athletes competed at the Mark Young Invitational at Yale over the weekend, which featured an array of competition from both Division I and Division II, including schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Atlantic 10 Conference and the Ivy League.
Wattely led a host of Owls with record-setting performances in the 200 meters. Her time of 23.7 was not only a personal best, but also a school record and the third-best time in Division II this year. She also ran a leg of the 4x100 relay that finished first with a time of 46.76 seconds.
Cameron won the shot put with a toss of 17.82 meters. His throw is currently the fifth best in Division II. He was also third in the discus with a toss of 48.69 meters
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
