NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) of the women’s track and field team and Ryan Whitehead (Darien, Conn.) of the men’s track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for February. The duo is among nine members of the track and field programs that will represent SCSU at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11-14.

Taylor continued to rewrite the school record books during the month of February. At the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, a meet in which the Owls placed second, she set new school and conference records in the 55 meter hurdles (8.06 seconds).

The next time out, Taylor claimed the New England Championship in that event after running ahead of a field that included competitors from the University of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Boston University, Holy Cross and Vermont. She was also a part of the 4x400 relay squad that earned All-New England laurels.

In addition, Taylor was also recognized as the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year during the month of February. She has been recognized seven times by the league during the indoor season – including after all four outings in the month.

Whitehead, a pole vaulter, also enjoyed an outstanding month and helped the Owls win their seventh straight Northeast-10 Indoor Track and Field Championship – and 13th overall track and field conference title.

His vault of 16 feet, 6 inches at the NE-10 Championships was a new conference record and earned him Most Outstanding Performer honors.

A week later, he cleared 16 feet, 2.75 inches to earn All-New England honors.
