NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Alexandra Avendano (Burlington, Mass.) of the gymnastics team and junior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Avendano had a strong weekend in two meets for the Owls, both of which resulted in season-high team scores. On Saturday, in a meet against Yale, New Hampshire and Bridgeport, she finished fourth on the floor exercise with a score of 9.85. She also registered marks of 9.625 on the vault and 9.025 on the beam. The following day in a meet against Brown, Springfield and SUNY-Cortland, she recorded three top-10 finishes. Avendano was third on the floor with a 9.75 and placed 10th on both the vault and beam with scores of 9.5 and 9.525, respectively.
Mallory etched his name in the Southern Connecticut record books during a 2-0 week. He started the week with his second career double-double, as he notched 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in a win over Assumption. Then, on Saturday, in a crucial Northeast-10 game against Bentley, Mallory set a new SCSU single-game record with 47 points in a thrilling 113-111 double-overtime victory over the Falcons. He averaged 31.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the two victories.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
