NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) of the women’s cross country team and junior Joseph Poulsen (Oxford, Conn.) of the men’s cross country team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for October.

Brustolon finished October as the first women’s cross country runner in school history to capture the Northeast-10 Conference individual championship. She won the meet with a time of 18:03.8 and also earned First Team All-Conference laurels after leading the group of 158 runners.

Brustolon was also honored as the Northeast-10 Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the New England Championships, where she finished fourth overall (out of 327 participants). She completed that meet in a time of 18:06.

For the second month in a row, Poulsen captured Athlete of the Month laurels. He closed the month with a sixth place finish (out of 136 participants) in a time of 25:29.8 at the Northeast-10 Championships. Thanks to his efforts, the Owls finished in third place and Poulsen collected First-Team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors.

Earlier in the month, Poulsen a finished 15th overall (out of 320 participants) at the New England Championships with a time of 25:04. He collected All-New England honors for his efforts and was named to the Northeast-10 weekly honor roll.

For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
