NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and senior Kyle Saunders (Massapequa, N.Y.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Chick-fil-A of North Haven/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Coward was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the 2017 NE10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships for her performance this past weekend. She registered first place finishes in both the shot put and hammer throw. Her toss of 59.69 meters in the hammer throw was a new NE10 record and a NCAA automatic qualifying mark, while her throw of 14.09 meters was a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Thanks in part to Coward’s efforts, the Owls finished second as a team at NE10’s.
Saunders set a new NE10 record in the discus with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 54.29 meters. It was also the second-best mark in SCSU program history and helped the Owls claim their 14th NE10 outdoor title.
Chick-fil-A of North Haven, located at 560 Universal Drive, is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
