Men’s Soccer Plays To Scoreless Draw With No. 6 Franklin Pierce

Owls finish regular season on Saturday

RINDGE, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State Men's Soccer played in the ultimate defensive struggle on Wednesday night as they played to a scoreless draw against No. 6 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Sodexho Field. With the tie, Franklin Pierce clinched the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship. The draw pushes SCSU's record to 10-2-4 (8-1-3 NE-10) while Franklin Pierce moves to 11-1-3 (10-0-2 NE-10).

Neither team was able to record a shot on goal throughout the match's 110 minutes. Each team attempted one shot in the opening half, while SCSU held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks in the first stanza. Franklin Pierce would control much of the play in the second half, as they held a 4-1 shots advantage and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. The two overtime periods saw fairly even play, as Franklin Pierce recorded a 2-1 shots advantage while SCSU was awarded a pair of corner kicks. For the game as a whole, Franklin Pierce held a 7-3 edge in the shots department while SCSU had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Despite the lack of offense, there was plenty of aggressive play throughout the match which resulted in four bookings. For Franklin Pierce, Frantz Francois and David Clifton were shown a yellow card in the in the 59th and 95th minutes, respectively. On the SCSU side of the ball, sophomore defender Vinicius DaSilva (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Michael Dibartolomeo (Wallingford, Conn.) received yellow cards in the 17th and 74th minutes, respectively.

Neither SCSU senior goalkeeper Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) nor Franklin Pierce goalkeeper James Thorpe were tested in the match. Both recorded zero saves and recorded shutouts.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, October 17 when they wrap-up the regular season with a Northeast-10 Conference contest on the road against Merrimack. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Warrior Field in North Andover, Mass.
