NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior forward
Colin Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) struck just before halftime for the only goal the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team would need on Saturday night, as they defeated Assumption 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play at Jess Dow Field. With the victory, SCSU improves its record to 8-2-3 (7-1-2 NE-10), while Assumption falls to 3-8-3 (2-6-2 NE-10) with the loss. The victory, combined with a St. Anselm loss against Franklin Pierce allowed the Owls to clinch a spot in the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Championships, to be held on Oct. 28-Nov. 4.
The Owls controlled possession for much of the first half, but could not find the net until 1:35 remained in the period. In the 44th minute, the ball was chipped towards the Assumption net. Greyhound goalkeeper Brandan Sullivan came out to the top of the 18-yard box to challenge SCSU junior midfielder
Djordje Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) as the ball bounced high off the turf. Jankovic was able to get his head on the ball as he collided with Sullivan and direct it to his right. The ball fell at the feet of Jackson, who struck it into the empty cage to give the Owls a 1-0 lead heading to halftime. SCSU held a 6-4 shots advantage in the first half.
Jackson's tally would hold up through the remainder of the contest, as SCSU again controlled possession for much of the second half. The Owls recorded a 7-1 shots advantage in the second stanza and a 13-5 edge for the game.
Senior goalkeeper
Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) made three saves in net to earn the victory for SCSU. Sullivan made six saves in front of the Assumption goal in defeat.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, October 9 when they host New Haven in their final non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.
