Heather Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded a match-high 12 kills to lead the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Nyack in the nightcap of a Saturday tri-match at the Bowman Center. Earlier in the day, sophomore
Manjit Chase (Alexandria, Va.) and juniors
Maria Arenas (Stratford, Conn.) and
Ashley Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) each recorded double-doubles, but SCSU fell 3-1 to Wilmington. With the split, the Owls now hold a 10-16 (2-5 NE-10) record.
In their first match of the afternoon, SCSU dropped the first two games 30-21 and 31-29, respectively, before taking the third game by a 30-24 score. Wilmington finished things off with a 30-26 victory in the fourth game. For the Owls, Arenas tied with sophomore
Tara Bregensir (Coal Township, Pa.) for the team lead with 12 kills each. Arenas added a team-best 21 digs to notch her first double-double of the season. Chase led SCSU with 26 assists and also recorded 13 digs to pick up her second double-double of the season.
Ashley Coombs made it a trio of SCSU double-doubles with her third of the season as she handed out 15 assists to go with 12 digs.
However, it was Wilmington which posted the match-highs on their way to victory. Brittani Leathern led the way for the Wildcats with a match-best 14 kills. Cheyann Gilroy led all setters with 36 assists. Kristie Shropshire led Wilmington's defensive efforts with a match-high 23 digs. Meghan Frick tallied 10 kills and 15 digs to record a double-double.
In the day's nightcap, the Owls swept Nyack by scores of 30-28, 30-19 and 30-28.
Lauren Coombs led the way with a match-best 12 kills, while
Ashley Coombs and Chase each dished out a team-best nine assists. Freshman
Robin Priest (Cheshire, Conn.) led the SCSU defensive effort with 15 digs.
In the loss for Nyack, Tara Leegwater handed out a match-best 23 assists while Colleen Weidman posted a match-high of her own with 16 digs. Lacey McCabe and Wendy Paige led the Warriors offensively with eight kills each.
The Owls return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they return home to host Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn.
