Owls Edged In Close Match With Concordia

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded 21 assists and 12 digs to tie for the team lead with her eighth double-double of the season, but the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Concordia on Thursday in non-conference action at the Meyer Athletic Center. Maddy Lorenz picked up a double-double for Concordia in the victory. The loss drops SCSU to 11-24 (2-11 NE-10) on the season, while Concordia improves to 13-13 (2-7 ECC).

The match was closely contested throughout, as the Owls registered 30 or more points in three separate games but were still defeated. The first two games went into overtime, with Concordia winning by 32-30 and 33-31 scores, respectively. SCSU got on the board with a 30-26 win in the third game before Concordia closed out the match with a 30-20 victory in the fourth game.

In addition to Coombs' 21 assists, sophomore Manjit Chase (Alexandria, Va.) helped key the SCSU offense with 20 assists of her own. The duo set primarily for junior #Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) and sophomore Marcia Hollingsworth (Alexandria, Va.) who led the team with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Defensively, freshman Robin Priest (Cheshire, Conn.) posted a match-high 18 digs to tie her personal season high. Hollingsworth tied for the match lead with six blocks (two solo).

For Concordia, it was Lorenz who led the way with 11 digs and a match-best 18 kills to notch the double-double. Tiffany Edwards joined Lorenz in double figures with 12 kills of her own. They attacked off the sets of Shannon Flaherty all night long as she piled up a match-high 44 assists. Defensively, Amanda Byrd led the Clippers with 14 digs, while Lorenz tied for the match lead with six blocks (two solo).

The Owls return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 3, when they visit Bentley to close out their 2007 season with a tri-match at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass. SCSU will take on the host Falcons in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 1 p.m. before playing non-conference foe Adelphi at 3 p.m.
