Men's Basketball Team Picks Up First Win Of Year

Owls edge New Haven, 76-74

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore guard Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored a career-high 24 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team to its first win of the season over the University of New Haven by a score of 76-74.

The Owls improved to 1-2 on the season. The Chargers from New Haven fell to 1-2 overall.

The first half included six ties and six lead changes, which neither team leading by more than six points. Harris led the Owls' scoring efforts in the first half with eight points, shooting 3-for-6 from the floor, including converting on both of his three-point attempts. The Owls entered the intermission trailing by a score of 37-31.

The Owls opened the game up with a 17-2 run over a span of 4:12 in the second half, bringing the score to 57-50 in favor of the Owls with 11:45 remaining the game. The Chargers brought the lead as close as two points, but never evened the score again. Despite not making a field goal in the final 5:12 of the contest, the Owls connected on 8 of 14 foul shots in that stretch to maintain the SCSU lead. New Haven had an opportunity to tie or take the lead with 5.9 seconds remaining and the Owls leading 76-74, but SCSU did not allow New Haven to attempt a shot as time expired.

Harris's career-high scoring output came on an 8-for-13 shooting output, including shooting 5-for-6 on three-point field goals and 3-for-6 from the free throw line. Senior Ktrice McNeill (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Peter Simek (Bratislava, Slovakia) both contributed season-highs with 15 and 12 points respectively. McNeill and Simek also led the Owls in rebounding with nine boards apiece. Junior Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) contributed all 10 of his points in the second half, including an 8-for-10 performance from the charity stripe.

The game-high in scoring came from University of New Haven senior guard Tetrick Stonar, who netted 27 points on an 11-for-25 shooting effort.

The Owls are back in action on Wednesday, November 28, as they resume their Northeast-10 schedule in Syracuse, N.Y. against the Le Moyne College Dolphins. The action tips off from the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex at 7:30 p.m.
