NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior guard Michelle Martinik (Masuk, Conn.) hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds and tied her career high with 19 points to notch her first career double-double and lead the No. 11 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to an 84-61 victory over St. Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play at Moore Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Kate Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) led the Owls with 28 points on the afternoon. Adrienne Carpenter led St. Michael's with 12 points in defeat. With the victory, the Owls improve to 4-1 (3-1 NE-10) while the Purple Knights fall to 5-2, 3-1 (NE-10).
After St. Michael's opened the game by taking a 6-2 lead, SCSU promptly went on a 10-0 run highlighted by six points from Lynch to take a 14-6 lead at the 13:25 mark of the first half. During the run, the Owls took a lead they would hold the rest of the way on a pair of Lynch free throws at 15:28. The Owls would close the first half by scoring the stanza's final 11 points over 4:09 to head into the halftime break with a 40-20 lead.
Lynch was the only player to tally double figures in the first half, as she finished the period with 20 points. Martinik led all players with eight first-half rebounds. For St. Michael's, Michelle Otey led the way with six points in the opening frame and tied with Anna Florent for the team lead with four rebounds each.
The Owls would tally the first bucket of the second half on a Martinik layup to extend the run to 13-0 and take a 42-20 lead. The 13-0 run was keyed by six points from Martinik and five points from Lynch. The teams would essentially trade baskets the rest of the way, with SCSU pushing the lead as high as 29 points on a pair of free throws by senior guard Kaylie Schiavetta (Northport, N.Y.) which gave the Owls a 68-39 advantage with 9:21 to play. For the game, Lynch led all players with 28 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She led three Owls in double figures on the afternoon. Martinik matched her career high with 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-8 from three-point range. Schiavetta finished one shy of her career best with 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc. For St. Michael's, Carpenter led the way with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 from the foul line. For the game, SCSU shot 29-for-61 (47.5%) from the floor, 7-for-18 (38.9%) from three-point range and 19-for-23 (82.6%) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, St. Michael's shot 25-for-58 (43.1%) from the field, 1-for-5 (20.0%) from behind the arc and 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the foul line. SCSU held a 23-12 advantage in assists and a 13-6 edge in second-chance points.
The Owls return to action on Monday, Dec. 3 when they host Felician in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven, Conn.
